I recently brought a blackstar ht metal 60 combo. I mostly play metal but I also play hard rock. I have a pretty decent guitar with active pickups but I am failing to get a nice punchy metal tone out of this amp. The first overdrive channel sounds extremely spongey and has no real clarity and attack. The second overdrive channel is slightly better but no matter what I do with the tone controls I just cant get a nice tight metal tone out of it, the only word I can use to describe it is it sounds 'spongey'. And no I don't crank the gain, I know how to dial in a good tone.
I was wondering if this is how the amp usually sounds or if there is something wrong with the valves? Would replacing the preamp valves make the tone a bit more defined and punchy? If so what brand of valves should I use as replacements?
Discussion - HT Metal amplifiers. This includes the 1, 5, 60 and 100 watt options. Metal as F*ck!
