Hi folks,

Im looking to dial some classic rock sounds with a stratocaster with low gain 50's classic pickups, Im trying to use the classic overdrive voice channel off, but all seems to be getting muddier when cracking the gain, on the clean channel I can dial really nice cleans, and the modern overdrive voice is just too much for me!

any one playing rock with a bridge strat around that can point me to dial a nice setting?

Cheers! :ugeek:

There is a demo here on you tube.I am not sure exactly what your looking for in sounds. But If you hear something in this link you like. You can pause the video & dial your amp to setting shown in video. He is using a differant guitar. But should get you close. Then you can tweak the gain or what not for your strat.Hope thia helps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7r17reetSg

I own a classic player 50s strat. Like you say very low output single coils. Ive tried numerous valve amps (series one, club 40, Marshall MA50, DSL50 etcc.) and they all fail on their crunch channels with this buiuld of strat.

I have tried pedals in front of those amps though on the clean channel. and its much much better although deep down I don't think this particular guitar is ideal for Rock or anything with medium / high gain full stop.

Clean though the tones are some of the best Ive heard.

So yeah Id try with pedals in front on the clean channel and see what you think.

I,m resigned now to accepting strat 50s for cleans to die for and Les Paul for crunch to die for. any guitar that will claim to do both well there will be some compromise in my opinion.

Hi, I have an 88 Strat, stock American Standard pickups, and I found by pushing the button out on the clean channel gave some good grit...the modern voice was too much for me on the OD but something that has produced good results is changing the preamp tube for the OD channel...replacing the 12AX7 nearest the front of the amp with a tube of lower gain (5751, 12AY7 are popular) has a good effect...for me a 12AU7 cut the gain by too much.
Experiment with what pickup position also...

Hope this helps,

Glenn

My amp's the HT-5RW, so you may get slightly different results, but I get a great bluesy rhythm using my Strat's bridge pickup, and the following gain channel settings: Gain 2, Bass 9, Mid 7, Treble 2, ISF 7 (and Level to taste). That gives me a lovely break-up that cleans up nicely from the guitar volume.
